Coalition for Community Cats (C4CC) and the Sacramento SPCA tackle Feral and Abandoned Cats at Cal Expo

Dec 20, 2008 was a very cold Saturday night at the stables of Cal Expo in Sacramento. This is the home to many feral and abandoned cats. It's a good home, with many caring people but the on-going arrival of new kittens made this a project for many dedicated TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) specialists in the greater Sacramento area. With the wonderful cooperation of Carol Jacobi and other folks at Cal Expo, Kay Schlegel of C4CC organized 19 special people to go to Cal Expo and trap the cats for Spay/Neuter at the Sacramento SPCA. Laurie Siperstein-Cook, Chief of Veterinary Services at the SSPCA, reserved 50 slots at her Dec 21st clinic especially for these cats. The SSPCA also waived the usual co-pay for this special event.

The trappers arrived at Cal Expo around 5:30, set up their traps in various designated high population areas and then did what we do----waited, trapped, waited, trapped and waited some more. In a little over 2 hours we had trapped 50 cats. After the cats were trapped, the SSPCA allowed the trappers to stage the cats at the SSPCA that night for the morning clinic. The cats were examined, fixed, ears cleaned, fleas killed and wounds treated. FANTASTIC!!!

One of the cats we really wanted to trap was a beautiful orange tabby whose name is Daddy Cat-for obvious reasons. Daddy Cat had a badly injured neck. Something like twine had been wrapped around it for over a year and had cut into his neck. No one had been able to trap and care for him-but----we did with a special "drop-down trap" provided by one of our dedicated group. Daddy Cat will no longer father anymore kittens but he will be much happier with his neck treated.

We will continue our work at Cal Expo and other areas as time and person power permits. I want to say a HUGE "Thank You" all the trappers (you know who you are) and again a special thank you to Carol and Laurie-very special people all.
